I have done this exact thing many times at shortstop on line drives and turned 2 (sometimes 3).There is actually a rule
That has a similar treatment to infield fly when the fielder intentionally drops the ball (Think line drive) but most umpires done know about it.

A trick of mine at shortstop is to let the ball go in and out of my glove and hit the ground, I then tag the runner leaving 2nd (he is confused), step on 2nd (to get that runner from 1st) and fire to 1st base to get the batter.

1 out of 10 times the umpire will call it correctly (batter out, runners go back to bases) but most of the time I get an extra out of it. 🙂

I know the rule (applies at all levels) but typically keep my mouth shut unless it benefits me 🙂

In this example, the umpire could have called dead ball, batter out but it is a judgement call if it is intentional or not.
