Sports journalism is the easiest profession--and correspondingly poorly paid. You don't have to go look for news; it rolls by you as the season progresses, year after year after year. Ambitious, creative reporters go find stories, dig up hidden facts and interesting insights; these reporters are few and far between. Lazy, old dogs just comment on the unfolding sports scene from their easy chairs. Some (Dick Harmon) rely on anecdotes from their aging sources and golfing buddies. Others (Monson) rely on shallow, click-baity snark--masquerading as edgy commentary. We do him a favor by clicking and responding emotionally. Still others (G-man) work hard, get out to all the local high school games and dig into recruiting--and get cut off because there's 100 guys on the internet willing to do it for free.
Sadly, the financial realities of local journalism--especially sports reporting--will put all of these guys out of business before the end of 2021.
