I could see him believing that because he makes everyone mad that he "must be doing something right". But yes, to me it just seems like it's all about saying stuff that drives traffic and some believe "there's no such thing as bad publicity". It strikes me as cheap/dime-a-dozen, but I guess it keeps him employed.
