Heaps got benched by Doman. Doman basically ignored Heaps the rest of the season. It was obvious to Heaps that the coaches were done with him, so he transferred. He never panned out elsewhere.
There's no question that Heaps was a disappointment compared to the hype that surrounded his recruitment. Heaps didn't have the "it" factor to be great and perhaps he wasn't ready to start in 2010 or 2011. Nonetheless, I don't blame Heaps for not having "it". Heaps worked hard and gave a lot of effort, but he just didn't develop. I don't blame Heaps much for being a bust.
Despite all that, Heaps might have improved a little bit in 2012 had the coaches wanted him to. That 2012 season was a complete waste of perhaps the best defense in BYU history and the emergence of Ziggy.
