Doctors get the spotlight but there are a lot of great career paths in medicine today that don’t require the enormous commitment (both in preparation and in practice) that being a physician demands. Nurse Midwife, NP, PA, physical therapist, respiratory therapist, etc.
I’m not saying to discourage the physician path, but I’m guessing at this point she probably just envisions a good career helping others in the medical field. All those positions I mentioned accomplish that without being a doctor (maybe even better at the helping people part).
I say this because that way if the highly competitive medical school prep and application process does not work out, or if she decides that the number of work hours and debt doesn’t agree with her other life or family goals, she won’t feel like she has to abandon medicine altogether.
Sorry, I know this didn’t answer what you asked about, but I’ve seen some family members get hyper focused on being a physician at that age. When it didn’t work out exactly as they planned years later they became discouraged and a little bitter. Another became a physician and is disenchanted with what it’s really like. I think this could have been avoided if they’d kept an open mind about different paths in medicine from the get go. Best of luck to your daughter and her goals, she sounds like a smart cookie.
