Not in modern times, from what I can tell gold is rarely the means by which
transactions occur. If people have gold and want to buy a car, they sell the gold for currency that they use to buy the car.

Yes, the goal was to facilitate peer-to-peer, verified, non reversible transactions via a distributed ledger design.
