Credit cards and personal checks are ways to transact with currency.
Following this example I would call bitcoin the currency and the process for adding transactions to the blockchain the credit card or personal check.

Yes, the goal was to facilitate peer-to-peer, verified, non reversible transactions via a distributed ledger design.
