Monopolies are monopolies specifically because they restrict competition.
The highest level of college football does not even call itself the "championship series." It calls itself the Football Bowl Series...because it's not a championship series...it's a caste system.

In the NFL, every team that starts the season has the same chance as every other team to win a championship. Yes there are advantages due to geography etc., but they are not built into the sport.

Same for the NBA. Same for Major League Baseball. Same for every sport administered by the NCAA except the country club FBS portion of college football. They monopolize. They restrict. They are completely anathema to everything that sports exists to encourage. The product on the field clearly demonstrates that.

Now if FBS were not a monopoly, then suddenly that kid who grew up cheering for say...Central Florida...could go to Central Florida, because all he has to do is win his conference and he's in the tournament. And if you're in the tournament, then all you have to do is win. You don't have to politic. You don't have to conduct PR campaigns. You win your conference, you are in the championship tournament.

They have a name for that...what is it...oh yeah it's called sports. It's called athletic competition. It isn't a beauty contest. It's not the football homecoming queen pageant. It's an athletic competition.

The second tier of college football is called the championship series...because they conduct a championship. They don't conduct American Idol. Simon Cowell doesn't get to decide who moves on. Every team in that division starts the season with the same access to a championship as every other team. So if they win, they deserve the title. They crown a champion.

Alabama is homecoming queen.

Now Alabama is by far the best team in college football. But they didn't win a championship. They won an invitational tournament.

If that's the way they want to run it, so be it. But don't pretend it's an actual championship. It's not. Championships give opportunities to everyone.

Championships produce the Miracle on Ice. Championships produce the wild-card Giants beating the undefeated Patriots.

Champions are never voted on. Champions earn everything on the field.
