But there’s something special about the autobid, including a ranking system

opens the door for teams to not fully control their fate. Football could never capture the magic of March madness, but what makes it so great is every team has a chance every year. They are 100% in control. If a team wins enough games and wins their championship, I wouldn’t want some computer ranking putting them at 27 and leaving them out based on that alone.
