of Utah for several decades. The AP finishes from the LaVell era and then into the first half of the Bronco are strong evidence of the first half of Utah passing BYU; BYU was clearly ahead of Utah, which must be the case if that school is going to be subsequently passed by. In other words, stats showing the total number of AP finishes (or something similar) is just as likely to show that the passed up team was indeed the superior team at one point. At some point post-LaVell, Utah passed BYU. During that period, Utah has more top 25 finishes to go along with other stats showing that it passed BYU. Again, and it really is not that complex, the total number of historical top 25 finishes is meaningless to the question of whether someone has been passed up the other, regardless of whether those top 25 finishes were from 1940-1970 or 1977-2007.
