Not even knowing the dad (the chaperone) almost seems like a deal-breaker to me.
I say almost because I understand that you’re struggling with your son and don’t want to push him further away.

But sending a teenage son off to that type of environment with a chaperone you don’t know and who may have very different values/priorities/limits seems a bridge too far.
