If you break that down to 2001-2009 and 2010-present, it shows a stark
difference in performance.

From 2001-2009 BYU was in the NCAA tourney 6 times. 3 times as a 12 seed and 3 times as an 8 seed. In those 6 tournaments, BYU had a record of 0-6. The "expected" win total for that time period would have been 3.6 wins.

From 2010-2021 BYU was also in the NCAA tourney 6 times (seeds: 7, 3, 14, 10, 11, 6). In those 6 tournaments, BYU had a record of 4-6. The "expected" win total for that time period would have been 5.23 wins.

Based on that number, it looks like BYU's tournament performance has been much better over the last 10 years as compared to the previous 10 years. In fact, if you remove this season, the previous 5 tournaments BYU had 4 wins and a similarly-seeded team would've expected 4.16 wins so BYU has been quite close to "average" in their performance against seed expectation over recent years.
