Detmer is the clear #1: Broke a ton of NCAA records, 2x Davey O'Brien as top QB, 2x first team all-American, Heisman Winner, plus a #3 Heisman finisher the next year
Arguable which of Steve Young and Jim McMahon is #2. Both won the Davey O'Brien as top QB, both had Top 3 Heisman finishes, were first team All-American (McMahon consensus, Young in many publications) and first round draft picks with stellar careers.
So you definitely can't put Zach ahead of any of those 3. One dominant season against third-rate competition, no Davey O'Brien, not All-American, not a Heisman finalist. Doesn't mean he won't have a better NFL career (Detmer was better at BYU than Young but Young had an ever-so-slightly better pro career).
So it comes down to whether Zach gets that last spot, in competition with Robbie Bosco, Max Hall, John Walsh, Marc Wilson, Gifford Nielsen. I'll fully admit I probably overlook the old guys (Marc Wilson and Gifford Nielsen) and I honestly don't think Hall belongs in the same conversation (great total numbers but partly based on starting 3 years, during which he won only one conference championship), but to me there's a clear choice for #4
Robbie Bosco: National Champ, 2x Heisman top 3, 2x Davey O'Brien top 3, led #1 offense in 1984, #2 in 1985
Like I said, I expect Zach to be better in the NFL than Bosco or Detmer, but he didn't do enough at BYU to knock any of those 4 off. Maybe one of the old guys did, but it's clear Zach isn't top 4.
