Try pulling up a section of the dry/dead stuff. If it comes up easily that would suggest the roots were eaten by a bug.

If you pull on it and it comes up easily with no resistance, it is 100% bugs. Gonna need to spray for them.

Highly likely it's grubs especially if that area is especially dry. Grubs like dry, sunny areas of lawn. I put down
