He left that year.
In 1970 BYU had the first black football player on the roster.

50 years later, BYU is still only 1% black, but nobody is going to tell those few that they can't date a white girl without being expelled.

I agree that it would be a major change, but other strongly held beliefs/practices (always tough to disentangle those...) have changed
