Go back and reread my original post.
Today the offense sucked as well.

No question. But that’s not the only problem with this team.

Anyone with any brain knew, absolutely knew, that a game like today’s was inevitable with this team. There’s no room for error on the offensive side of the ball because the defensive scheme doesn’t allow for it.

This defense is DESIGNED to keep the ball away from our own offense. And then we’re supposed to be impressed by just how effectively they do that.

A failure to stop a third down conversion is effectively a failure to take the ball away from the opponent. Instead of us having the ball, they get to keep it. Call it what you will but, by allowing the conversion, the defense has created the equivalent of a fumble by the offense. In both cases the opponent’s offense gets the ball at the spot of the screwup first and ten.

So, praise the lack of points we allow all you want. But recognize that the same scheme ALSO limits the number of points our offense gets to score.

If our offense is better than theirs, such a trade off inevitably creates close victories rather than blowouts. And if the offense screws up at any point, our intentionally reduced margin puts the entire game at risk. Why have we just barely beaten clearly inferior teams? Because of our defensive scheme.
