Reid had made a comment that Burgess had disappointed LDS people everywhere by
going to Duke. The public outcry seemed to put the church and BYU in a bad light. Reid and his sons departed with many hurt feelings. The cupboard was bare and Tony Ingle was not prepared for the job he was given. The team had bad chemistry and talent and mailed it in on effort level that year.
