I agree that Jaren has a better surrounding cast--i.e. more playmakers.
That said, he has much better mechanics and a better release than Taysom. Go back and watch some BYU games where Taysom would throw balls over receivers heads, skip ball off the ground, or drill receivers with bullets on short routes. Taysom's mechanics quickly went out the window as soon as the pocket started to break down. He also had an extremely quick clock in his head that made it difficult for him to be patient and allow receivers to get open downfield. Everybody's had a lot to say about Jaren (both good and bad) this season. The most consistent complaints that I'm seeing about Jaren are two-fold:

First, people are complaining that he isn't hitting receivers in stride on long passes--I'm talking 25+ yard passes. We were extremely spoiled by a QB last year that was good at this and he absolutely roasted Sunbelt/MWC/AAC conference teams (often with wide open receivers). So when our relatively inexperienced guy this year isn't doing it consistently against mostly P5 defenses, all of the armchair QB's on CB have weekly meltdowns. I think that this will get a lot better as his confidence grows and as he gets more reps.

Second, many are saying that he doesn't "see" the field very well. This is both true and false. I believe that the issue is mostly an experience and a chemistry thing. There have been some plays where he didn't see the wide open guy on a shorter route, and he instead focused on a guy further downfield. I've also seen people point to the decreased TE productivity as evidence that he doesn't see the field well, while completely ignoring the fact that the TE's are being kept back as blockers, or that many plays don't even have a TE on the field. This is also being impacted by the fact that the WR's are getting open downfield, and there isn't the same need to dump off a shorter pass to the TE who is often a third for fourth option on a given play.

Jaren has generally been very careful with the ball, and hasn't tried to force the ball into tight coverage. He doesn't have the same gunslinger mentality that Zach Wilson possesses, but he doesn't need to be Zach Wilson. He's very athletic and can move around and escape danger well, but he's always looking downfield and trying to get rid of the ball. Once Taysom Hill started moving around, he was no longer looking downfield as much and was instead looking for running lanes.
