Joseph F. Smith talked about a time when he was confronted by

extremists as young adult. One of the men on a horse swore that he would kill anyone that was Mormon. Joseph F. Smith unafraid and without backing down said he was Mormon rather positively. The bold answer startled the man that had a gun pointed at him and ended up shaking his hand.

I'm sure he was just following the spirit. And I'm guessing that is always the best way to handle it.
