Chants like this have happened before (even at an away UofU game I once attended—so I can empathize with the Y fans there who were ticked off). but institutions either didn’t know about it or swept it under the rug. Kudos to USC for doing the right thing under the circumstances. Hopefully USC’s clear position will help the participating students mature. While bigoted speech in the context of a sporting event may seem relatively harmless and lighthearted, someone might not get the memo it’s a joke. And if not condemned, institutional tolerance may embolden real bigots.
