What determines market value if not the market? And absolutely no way the NCAA gets involved
And does the walk-on at BYU "deserve" his $3k? Nick Billoups is the 5th string QB, and I'm willing to bet you couldn't pick Talmage Gunther out of a lineup or which one is Tanner Wall. Does them wearing a Built Bar sticker at practice provide $3k value?
My guess is that the NCAA won't want to touch any of those questions... The Supreme Court already told them that they shouldn't be limiting in any way the amount that student-athletes can receive. More than that, if they do limit it and are found to have done so illegally, they'll likely be stuck paying treble damages...
Which means paying 3x the amount they prevented student-athletes from earning. If Texas wants to give Ewers $8M and the NCAA doesn't allow it, they're risking a $24M hit if it's found they acted improperly.
