The history of the Church is one of political loss and acquiesce, not of political victory. (Polygamy, prohibition, New Deal....gay marriage). In most cases, the Church loses the causes it throws a lot of money at. The ERA might be a rare exception.
Again, this is an accreditation issue. This is an issue of maintaining an academic foothold. As much as BYU is a religious place of learning, it is at least somewhat critical that it actually remain a university. The Church has relinquished its holdings before. Sure, Primary Children's is "just" a hospital now. But it can still do a lot of good. And owning a hospital and running a church started to become too complicated, ergo...PCH was sold off.
