Your last sentence touches on some clear reasons this is a bad idea.
1. BYU is a part of "the kingdom". Not just any part, but a key part of it since many leaders of the church are educated there. At an age where many young people question their faith, BYU provides a spiritual environment.
2. There are big PR implications to what happens at BYU. From a ROI perspective, it's well worth their time to oversee the administrative hirings.
