Which reportedly was a good defense effort, by some of you. Yet I see a Arizona team that is not very good on offense with rookie quarterbacks and after the first quarter they’re able to move the ball pretty well against BYU defense minus a few key sacks. I’m seeing a lot of three man fronts and box alignment that are giving lots of space to gain yards on the ground. At several points they scan to the Arizona coach and you can clearly see him saying run it again. This is a notable on short down distances were BYU’s alignment is absolutely outmanned in the box. Lbs too far back and unable to close the distance to stop the first down gain. There are also a lot of missed tackles. Some of this is defenders that simply can’t get off blocks or do not close well in space. D lineman stood up at the line and pushed out of outside contain, absolutely bad pass rushers unless there is a blitz.
The coverage is not very good at times as there is a lot of gaps to throw in the zones (even dropping 7-8) and especially on the sidelines. Lbs covering space without good movement toward actual Receivers.
Primary reason Arizona failed to score more was their own ineptitude; they clearly had quarterbacks that had no idea what to do if you blitzed and that’s where byu stopped them several times. Plus their qbs weren’t good passers.
This doesn’t exactly give me a lot of hope that we are getting guys back that are going to be difference makers or that the scheme is the right one for next year. I hear a lot about the quality of our linebackers but the only one that really stands out to me when I watch this game is Pilli. There are several others that are have a lot of seniority that are whiffing and having a lot of problems in coverage. It was the first game of the year so I’m sure that was part of it. Hopefully some of the newcomers will be improved and they will actually reevaluating some of the scheme, but I have my doubts.
