Hmm. . . I think I quite like this

Win your three team pod and you get in for what becomes a four team playoff for the conference title. I agree that it would create excitement among much of the league in the final weeks of the season.

The down side I see is that you only have 2 conference foes that you play every year. There's something great about developing a rivalry with several of your conference mates. But, I think it's an intriguing idea.
