I worked picking crops too — we got paid by the crate. But as soon as you

started getting fast enough to make good money, they moved you to $3/hr.

I remember when the guy who ran the kid crew came to me with the "offer" to put me on an hourly wage. He tried to make it sound like he was doing me a favor. I understood why he set things up that way, but I was insulted that he thought kids my age wouldn't realize the move to hourly wasn't a benefit for us.
