The old owner hadn't maintained all the equipment in the shop, and the new owner didn't do his due diligence. After a year under new ownership, I asked for a raise since I hadn't had one in 2 years and felt I had worked my butt off learning the ins and outs of the new production-level digital printer they bought, and two weeks later was laid off. The owner told me that they had been paying payroll with their personal credit for months. A part-time co-worker had an overlapping skill set, so she stayed on and I was laid off. My oldest was a year old, and my wife had just quit being a teacher. Fun times.
