This is what my wife tells me to do. She was a home ec teacher and took classes on food-borne illnesses, as she is quick to remind me when a question like this comes up.

When our milk is near or at the expiration date, I pour some in a glass and smell and/or taste it. Don't judge...

‘Best by’ does not man ‘expiration’. Just a potential not to taste ideal
