Not when you factor in mental health and suicide. I'm very grateful to live in
an area where so many people have guns in their homes. It provides a certain level of safety for the community that there are little to no random break-ins because you have to assume every house has a gun in it. But that aside, if you don't have a specific threat (see crazy ex-husband or something along those lines), you are putting yourself in more danger by getting a gun than not getting a gun.

Now, if you like shooting guns, go ahead and get a gun and have some fun because you are at least deriving something positive. And there is something to be said about helping someone's mental health that can't properly do risk assessment. So maybe your wife sleeps better knowing a gun is in the house (but under no circumstances should that gun be readily accessible-hence, why buying a gun for the reason that JDBlue's wife wants one is a stupid idea).
