See step 1 in managing your own curated reality was to selectively
emphasize a fact that you believe demonstrates the truth of your worldview:
Suicide is horrible right? Straight white men better not underestimate how much it harms others!
But then you were confronted with a fact that produced dissonance - suicide disproportionately impacts white men. Bad fact for your worldview. To dissipate this dissonance, you interpret this fact in a way that restores the truth of your worldview - ie, suicide impacts men because masculinity is toxic. Either way, the problem exists because of the “other side.” Phew, your curated view of the world survives.
