I see people on cougarboard, me I am one, who criticize someone who made millions taking a job which he was not qualified for. Now I would willingly allow any of you to put me down call me names, urinate on my door step or spread used kitty litter on my lawn for millions of dollars.
I am sure people call me names behind my back all the time and I am okay with that, because I grew up in a generation that didn't need a safe space. I burned my backside on metal slides often. I live with the consequences of my decisions and I don't choose jobs that put me in the public spotlight. These people are grown adults that choose public spotlight occupations, that come with a high degree of criticism and they get paid more in 7 years than 90% of the world make in their entire lives.
They have this opportunity because of fans, people like me, people like you, even people who urinate on doorsteps and dispose of used kitty litter on their neighbors lawn. Even though the institutions are their direct employers, in a round about way, we are also their employers, and forums like this are often the only way to let our displeasure be known.
Now I am not LDS, and for that I am sure I just entered the ignore filter of numerous people on the board. I am a BYU football fan only. I know several people like to think that BYU fans are the best and never treat people poorly, but that is just not true. My daughter who is 12, went to the UVU soccer camp. They got free passes to the UVU home games. She went to every single home game, knows the names and numbers of all the players. She gets private coaching from one of their players, and her dream is to play for UVU. I have always told her BYU is a good school and she should keep her options open. At the most recent BYU-UVU soccer game, she was cheering as loud as she could for UVU, shouting their names and giving encouragement. Two rows in front of us were a group (I am assuming young womens group) who were openly mocking her, mimicking her and making fun of her. Who does that to a 12 year old? Are you going to start walking through the stands and making sure people cheer appropriately? Are you going to make sure your fans are treating others with respect? No of course not. I wouldn't expect you to.
My point is, you only want to regulate speech, not actions. You only want to regulate speech when it affects people you like. You really don't care about the people on the outside. You probably wouldn't stick up for a 12 year old cheering for the people she idolizes, many who are mormon and return missionaries. But you stick up for a 40 year old millionaire. It sounds like you should probably move on from the board.
