No need to put "assistance" in quotes when you were given free housing until you
got married. It wasn’t money in your pockets, but it was some combination of student loans with interest or overtime not needed that many students don't get.
If you have to ask yourself if it was assistance, imagine the government giving that to people with no payback expectation and ask what you would consider that.
