So the parents are well off, especially if the car is really "their kid's". I remember my Grandpa (who was a carnut)
was reading a Car and Driver about the new Maybach, which was basically a Benz powered luxury yacht retailing for $250k back in 2003 or so.

He started by mentioning how absurd the price of the car was and "who would dare buy the thing??" Then he figured if he had the salary of a professional athlete buying a Maybach was about the same percentage of his salary as if my Grandpa went to walmart to buy a t-shirt.

Surely nobody would judge my grandpa for dropping $20 on a t-shirt when so many in Africa are living in poverty, so why should he judge an executive for buying a Maybach at $250k when my Grandpa was living off of retirement and social security?

Kind of a unique perspective. If my wife and I were bringing in $300-400k net combined, I could see myself buying an EV such as a Tesla or BMW EV and handing it to the kids to drive around for two reasons:

1) I don't have to worry about gas.

2) it's a fun car for me to drive (the same reason kccougar buys the cars he buys).

But....I don't bring in $300k gross, so my kids will likely go to school in a 2008 Lexus GX470. By 2025, that GX is going to be a relic, but I'm sure some parent will think I'm crazy for "sending my kids to school with a nice Lexus".

So it all depends on where you are coming from I guess.
