I was a BYU TA that tutored athletes. It's not quite what you say, there's a
middle ground.
They get more support than other students for sure. Personalized attention and tutoring. But they still have to do the work and pass the tests. So they are not graded differently, just supported differently.
But I can't say that's true in every department, or that everyone follows school philosophy on this.

When BYU loses a recruit to a lower tier school, I just assume it has more to do with academics than anything else but
