I feel like your sentiment is mine: it is not a crutch. We have succeeded with

the HC in place. We have the resources to make up for it. It definitely puts a lower ceiling on us, but we have the resources to get better guys than UVU for sure. I don't have an answer, but I hate that it's a crutch when we struggle.
If you want to talk about why we will never be the next Gonzaga, then yes, HC.
