To be fair, even if it was tribalism, guys like President Randall, KW, Brit Covey or convert stories
like Weddle and Henry-Cole would seem to make rooting for Utah more enticing compared to any other P5. In fact, the famous F the mormon chants and old polygamy jokes follow Utes at almost every tough road venue.
A lot of LDS / Utah citizens take that route. Rooting for any school in the state that's getting national attention for whatever reason.
At the same time, I understand the frustration inherent with the number of ex mo's, less actives, active LDS "rejected" by BYU and so forth who tie the rivalry to stronger emotional sensitivities. That practice is weird to me...totally unfair...and brings more unnecessary animosity. I can see why that leads to people to hate the program. Most Utah fans brush that off as the minority or as folks who aren't even Utah fans or alums.
