I’ll defend it.
I think it’s funny, and I’d think it were funny if it went the other way.
Every fan base does this. If it were OSU they would be saying “eff Michigan,” and vice versa. BYU fans are the first to say “Ref you suck.” That’s the BYU equivalent of “eff you ref.”
Are we clutching pearls because of a naughty swear? Ehh it’s just the F word. It only has power over you if you let it. If Utah admin sent out a note asking students to swap it for “BYU sucks,” would you feel better?
I was much more bothered by the sacrament shots because that was making fun of a religion not a school, and a sacred ordinance. BYU is a school not a religion… I have no problem if someone says “eff Notre dame” either…
It’s also different than the Oregon Chant which was also directed towards a religion not a school. Surely you see the difference between these two, right? I wouldn’t be offended if a fan base shouted “eff you Jacksonville state” to an HBCU, but if they shouted “eff you black people,” it would be bad, right?
I like good natured ribbing. I think you need thicker skin. Unless, as I suspect, this is an excuse to look down on Utah fans as heathens in which case congratulations you have your reward.
