I have only had it happen once or twice in my life. Although, I wouldn’t really
characterize it as paralyzing, but I started having an attack.

Once was when very short-lived, and I totally embarrassed myself in front of my kids. I had a panic attack in the ride at Epcot where you are in a tiny little pod and pretend you are landing a rocket. I was getting a little claustrophobic and knocking on the door because I wanted to get out. Then the ride was delayed about 5-10 minutes. By the end of the time, I was completely pounding on the door, but they never came to open it.

The other time was really strange. My wife and I were on our way back from Hawaii. While waiting to take off, I started panicking. I used to travel a lot for work and had never been even the slightest bit nervous about flying. But I didn’t want to be on the flight. Again, it was made worse because we got delayed and had to sit on the tarmac for a while. Fortunately, I had some Adderall with me. I took more than I usually do, and went to sleep in about 5 minutes.

A week or two later, I decided to go to a class in Chicago and I had to fly by myself. I did some research about why it happened that way. Something that worked for me (because I am so logical in my thinking) was to look at things logically. For me, that was going through all the reasons they wouldn’t let the plane fly if it was dangerous or justifying the risk I was taking (flying) was worth the reward of attending the class.
