He played 7 years at the end of his career with a sub 700 OPS. Philly and Cincinnati let him play basically every day to chase the record.

Rose got his 4256 over 15890 plate appearances.
Cobb needed just 13095 to get his 4189.

That's a difference of 4 seasons.
