The Change Healthcare cyberattack effectively shut down the largest healthcare payment system in the US. It created mass chaos and has threatened hospitals and healthcare organizations across the country. Some have been able to pivot to other clearinghouses, but it was (is) a massive headache and has stopped collection of payment for millions of accounts.
I may be wrong, but I believe that most of the anesthesiologists at Intermountain are part of a private corporation that contracts with Intermountain facilities. As such, they are not on Intermountain’s payrolls.
I do know that contracted groups of physicians have had to skip paychecks and payouts for this month. Asking your employees to take a HELOC seems drastic, and I would hope a well-compensated physician would have a reserve to draw upon, rather than being beholden to living paycheck-to-paycheck.
But I agree with the OP: the emphasis of providing care has shifted towards attracting executive “talent,” and has led to a bloating of salary, bonuses, and payouts for maladroit management. I do believe there is a way to foster high quality community care, attract top physicians and nurses, and do so without selling your soul to corporate culture. The recent leadership have not been great stewards of the Church’s gift.
