After years away from home, experiencing the horrors of war, you have a lot of broken people. Probably a bunch who shipped out already broken too. Depravity abounds.

When you land in a far off place without anchoring influences of those who know you, it’s very easy (natural?) to feel that you’ve stepped out of time and reality. It does not feel like real life and the choices you make don’t seem to matter as much because at some point you’ll leave all of this behind to pick your real life back up right where you left it. It seems impossible that the two worlds could ever meet.

I suspect that the mental lines between friend-ish and foe-ish at the end of the war weren’t as defined as they might appear to us today.
