It's not a misnomer
The use of "per" is to indicate a ratio where the first word is the numerator and the second word is the denominator
Miles per gallon = Miles / Gallons
People per square mile = People / Square Miles
Post per day = Posts / Days
Yards per attempt = Yards / Pass Attempts
Miles per gallon = Miles / Gallons
People per square mile = People / Square Miles
Post per day = Posts / Days
