thick, right? There is no misnomer. It's a stat that takes completion % and yards/completion and combines them into one very nice stat: yards per attempt. Higher completion % would mean higher yards per attempt. Higher yards/completion would mean higher yards per attempt. If you have a sucky completion % but each pass goes for 50 yards, you're not penalized for the low completion %. If you complete 100% of your passes but each one is a 1 yard swing pass to the fullback, you are penalized for such short yardage. I can't believe I took the time to write this out.
