Plus you need to be able to see what athletically gifted 2nd and 3rd string players can do when given the chance to contribute. I like the Texas A&M attitude about the 12 man always being represented on the field (a walk on in a leadership role on ST's). aTm usually has very good ST units. ST's only have to do 6 things and do them really well:

KO
Punts
KOR's
PR's
Place Kicks (Extra Points and Field Goals)
Place Kick Defenses

Yet those six things are critical because the first four establish field position dominance which helps your defense, and the last two directly affect scoring every time.

Now once a head coach looks at ST's in that simple light, he gets it, he gets that being excellent in that one aspect of the game can make or break your run at a top 25 season. You cannot be good in 4 of those areas and marginal in two and think you have a chance of being elite. Somewhere along the way, you need that field goal, that blocked kick, that no return TB or that punt inside the five. Look at what Riley Stephensen did to SDSU in the bowl game...maybe one of the best individual punting performances I have ever seen in a single game.

It only takes one breakdown to ruin a day or even a season. BYU could have defeated Washington in Seattle at the beginning of the 1996 season (would have been 15-0, not 14-1) with better ST coverage. BYU should have defeated Indiana in the 1979 Holiday Bowl except it was three odd ST breakdowns that cost them the game, an undefeated season and top 5 finish. ST breakdowns cost BOTH BYU and UTAH several times in the series during the last 2 decades. ST breakdowns cost Bobby Bowden two more national titles. Coaches that do not take this aspect of the game seriously are destined to look back and wonder why they didn't spend five minutes more drilling players to stay in their lanes or kick three more balls.
