It keeps those normal bench guys completely involved in the game not just
waiting for the guy in front of them to get injured. Also nothing keeps you practicing harder during the week than knowing that you are going to be in the game. Most special teams play is highly effort based (of course you have to concentrate that effort into the correct scheme). I just don't always see that full effort from the starters who are definitely more skilled but have many more things to concentrate on. I grew up watching the Texas A&M kick off return team with the 12th man (a non-scholarship player "suicide squad"). Loved it. Made everyone else on the kickoff coverage team more motivated.
