I won't hire without one. not because when it says is vitally important...
But because anyone can have a career center crank out their resume. Resumes may tell me why they may be qualified for the job; but they don't tell me why this person wants the job.

I don't extend the invitation for interviews unless I know they are doing more than just going through the motions. Archaic as they may be, a well written short cover letter tells me a lot.
