In the end it has to be cost.
Utah and Salt Lake counties have had HUGE increases in population over the past 15 years and yet demand for sporting events has not increased with that. So to me that says two main and related factors are coming into play: cost and convenience.

Utah county is full of younger families are more limited budgets. They are much less likely to pay for tickets to a game for a large, young family. Also, it is much easier to watch the game on ESPN from the comfort of your home and not deal with the hassle of parking, tickets, food, and the overall cost. In a tight economy, something has to give for most families and going to football games is a luxury.

I'm still perplexed how a booming population hasn't countered much of the reasons above though.
