Yeah, it isn't something BYU had control over. But even things we don't control affect fans interest.

I think it is pretty true that beating CSU when they were part of the conference was more interesting than beating, say, Houston who is not part of our conference. When we are undefeated and ranked, maybe that shouldn't be true. But if we have two loses and are unranked, I see why fans would prefer to beat a conference-mate than to beat a "random" team from the other side of the country. Its just part of independence, I guess.
