Lavell has commented about this in an interview.

He said that despite the rumors, McMahon did not violate the honor code, partly because they had too many coaches watching everything he did He also said that McMahon knew what he wanted out of BYU and was not going to screw it up. McMahon has said that he left BYU when he was finished. He was not kicked out.

I know rumors are fun and all but they get a little tiring.
