Here are quotes from JM, Steve Young and Lavell about it.
Unfortunately, Lavell's is the least specific. But I believe that Lavell essentially told him that if he was going to party, that he needed to leave Provo.

Jim was on KNBR sports radio in the Bay Area. When asked if LaVell Edwards really told Jim McMahon to just "Take the parties to Park City" Jim replied

"Oh yeah, we had many discussions. Every Monday morning, actually. I got called into his office and he would tell me all the stories that he'd been hearing all weekend and I'd share with him some of the stories that I'd heard. I don't know who's got it out for me but I said, 'I wasn't even in Provo this weekend'.

I never spent a weekend in Provo. I always ---after the game --I'd head up to Ogden and there I would be having fun, having the parties but not in Provo."

Said former coach LaVell Edwards: "He spent more time in my office than I did."

I also personally heard Steve Young tell KNBR (during one of his weekly interviews) that Lavell Edwards told Jim McMahon to take his partying to Park City. That is why KNBR later asked Jim about it when they had him studio. I am sorry I could not find a link. I heard it with my own ears. Take it for what it is worth.
